Kennelcough
Kennelcough is probably the most known disease among dog kennels. Where there is more than one dog there is a chance of kennelcough and a chance that the dogs infect each other.
Kennelcough is a condition like humans have a virus infected cold. The Virus has a incubation time between 3-8
days, where the dog doesn't show any signs of illness, but is highly contagious to other dogs.
This unfortunatly means that it is impossible forsay a kennel to predict or point out a carrier.
Kennelcough starts with the dog making noises as if it's got something caught in its throat, which it can't get out. Some dogs cough so much that slime can come up..
Kennelcough ussualy last 3-5 days, but the contamination last up to 3 weeks.
You should pay attention to:
Kennelcough is harmless, and if the dog acts normal, that means eats and drinks and doesn't have a fever, a veterinarian isn't necessary. (a dog has a fever at 39 degrees celsius).
In the days with the cough (3-5 days)you should at all means keep the dog at ease. short trips on a leash,
the cough can get persistent and last up to 4 weeks if the dog is physically strained.
Furthermore it is important to keep your dog away from other dogs. Kennelcough is highly contagious.
Treatment:
There is no real treatment against kennelcough, but in bad cases Noskapin tablettes kan soothe the cough. Noskapin can be bought at a local pharmacy.
In some cases the dog can get a fever, and it that case you should contact your veterinarian, and the will get penicillin.
At Hørsholm Dyrepension we try out best to minimize the threat of kennelcough, besides the daily cleaning we disinfect all rooms daily, and the kennel is regurlarly shut down. But we can't completely rule of the risk of kennelcough. it's like at a kinder garden, one child ill - everybody's ill.
If a dog get's a fever while staying with us, it will immediately be taken to a veterinarian.
Injuries:
When the dogs are motivated and playing, there is of course a larger risk of getting injured.
At Hørsholm Dyrepension we usually don't have any injuries, but it happens that a pad or a nail gets hurt.
If the injury makes the dog limp, or won't stop bleeding the will be sent to a veterinarian.
Diarrhea:
Diarrhea is also a common "kennel disease" because it is also a very contagious disease between the dogs.
Should it happen to your dog, it will be starved on day 1, on day 2 it will be feed with diatrist chow containing boiled fish or chicken and toast. On day 3 the dog should be well otherwise it will be taken to a veterinarian.
